Competitions at Aalborg Guitar Festival 2022

1. Aalborg International Composer Competition for classical guitar. 

Aalborg Guitar Festival and Competitions invites entries for the Composers' Competition for the six-stringed classical guitar. The competition has been arranged in collaboration with Bergmann Edition and with the support of the Augustine Foundation (https://augustinusfonden.dk).

 

One of the aims of the competition is to promote new work and enlarge the classical guitar repertoire. The intention is that the composer will meet the guitarist, and the guitarist will meet the audience.

 

Bergmann Edition is the facilitator of the competition and is, therefore, the point of contact.

 

General Guidelines and rules:

  • Open to composers of all ages and nationalities.

  • Compositions submitted must be written for solo guitar.

  • Compositions must be written for the six-stringed classical guitar.

  • Alternative tunings are acceptable.

  • Fixed media and/or live electronics are not accepted.

  • Compositions submitted must be no longer than eight minutes.  

  • Composers may submit multiple works.

  • Compositions submitted must be previously unpublished (not published by a commercial publishing house).

  • The competition is organized by the society: Aalborg International Guitar Festival & Competitions.

  • The decision of the jury is final. The judging system is an internal system and is not open to public discussion.

  • Remaining regulations: All potential problems and/or situations not covered by the above rules will be decided by the organizers of the competition

 

Submissions:

Application Deadline: October 15th 2022. 

Application Fee: €50 for each work (+ ticket sales fee). Multiple works may be submitted (an additional application fee must accompany each extra work).

Application materials and fees must be submitted and paid online no later than October 17th, 2022, by 11:59 pm.

Please make a pdf copy of your payment receipt/ticket, and send it together with your music and mp3 file of your work to:

allanbergmann@gmail.com (before October 17th, 2022, by 11:59 pm). Application fees are non-refundable.

2. The pieces must be notated in a music notation program: We accept Finale, Sibelius, Musescore, and Dorico files. We also accept Music.XML files, as long as the XML is readable by one of the four listed applications.*)

*) We can test the readability of the XML file before you join the contest. Send the files to allanbergmann@gmail.com for testing.

 

  • You must include a recording as an mp3 file of the work, either a live recording or a computer-generated mock-up.

  • All compositions will be anonymized before being presented to the judges.

  • All files must be sent to  allanbergmann@gmail.com (before October 17th, 2022, by 11:59 pm).

 

Prizes

  • Three prizes will be awarded.

  • 1st prize: 

    • The winner will receive a €1,000 prize.*

    • The winning work will be published by "Bergmann Edition", both on paper and digital.

    • The winning work will be dedicated to the winner of the 1. category. 

  • The 2nd and 3rd prizes will be published as print-on-demand.

  • Judges have the right to award all or some of the prizes or none.

  • Winning compositions will be announced at the Award Concert on November 20th 2022, 14.30 and posted online at www.aalborgguitarfestival.com       as well as at: https://www.facebook.com/Aalborginternationaleguitarfestival.

  • The winner of the 1. prize will receive an email, and €1,000 will be transferred to the winner's bank account. 

 

Jury

The jury will consist of 3 judges.  All of them have international experience as a composer, arranger and/or performer.

 

Chairman of the jury: 

Simone Iannarelli, Italy/Mexico.

Composer, guitarist and professor of guitar at the Institute of Fine Arts of the University of Colima in Mexico.

 

Other Jury members

Antonio Duro, Spain

Professor at Conservatorio Superior de Música, Manuel Castillo, Sevilla, Spain. Very active in the field of new music and has premiered and performed a myriad of new compositions for classical guitar.

Colette Mourey, France. 

Classical guitarist, music educator, musicologist and composer.

 

RECORDINGS AND BROADCASTS

The Aalborg International Guitar Festival & Competition is entitled to take photos, audio and visual recordings of the competition, arrange broadcasts, and distribute these recordings and pictures without any remuneration to the performers concerned.

4. Aalborg International Guitar Competition.

Category I for Classical Guitar Solo: 

(Category II for Classical Guitar Solo see below).

Conditions of participation in Category I:

  • The Aalborg Guitar Competition is open to classical guitarists of all countries

  • University or Conservatory students or professional players.

  • Maximum age of 35 by the start of the competition.

Every participant taking active part declares to accept:

  • ​The decisions of the jury

  • The general rules of the competition

Participation fee: kr. 1.500 (200 €) including free entrance to all concerts, free accommodation (this can be with a host family arranged by us) from 16.11.2022- 20.11.2021 and free meals consisting of breakfast, lunch and dinner on November 19th, as well as breakfast and lunch on November 20th. All Meals on the 19th as well as on the 20th will be served at the Skipper Clement School where the festival has its base of operations.

Please note also (bonus):

Participants who do not proceed to the Grand Final will be offered one free masterclass (one hour). The festival's organization allocates times and teachers no later than 18.11.2021.

Regulations for playing at the rounds:  

  • Playing time in all rounds starts as soon as the participant has taken his/her seat. 

  • If the participant does not comply with the regulations, disqualification follows.

 

Preliminary round:

  • Max. performance time must not exceed 12 minutes. 

  • The repertoire is free choice, but must include music from two different historical periods.

 

Semifinal round:

  • Max. performance time is 18-20 minutes maximum.

  • Repertoire from the preliminary round cannot be repeated in this round. 

  • The repertoire being performed must include music from at least two historical periods.

 

Grand Final:

  • Performance time is a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum 25 minutes.

  • Repertoire is free choice, but must include music from at least two different historical periods.

  • Repertoire from the two previous rounds may be repeated.

Round One:

  • November 17th 2022 from 9.00 -17.00.

Semifinal round:

  • November 18th 2022 from 10.00 - 16.00.

  • Names the semifinalists will be announced during the concert taking place on November 17th at 19:30. See concert program for location.


 

Grand Finale:

  • November 19th 2022 from 15.00 - 17.00.

  • Names of the finalist will be announced at the concert on November 18th at 19.30. See concert program for location.

Special Competition Regulations for Category I:

  • The sequence of performance will be selected the evening before the preliminary round by drawing lots. Lots will again be drawn for the semifinal and then again for the Grand Final. For the audience prize in Category I each attending member of the audience, who is present at the final round, has one vote only.


  • Participants must bring 2 copies of the pieces that they are playing in all rounds. The compositions a participant wants to perform must be put in a sealed envelope with the participants name on it. The order of those pieces must also be written on the envelope. This envelope must be handed over to the organizers of the competition before the evening concert (see concert program for location) on October 16th 2022 or on October 17th 2022 in the morning before the preliminary round, latest at 9.30 at Musikkens Hus, Musikkens Plads 1, 9000 Aalborg


Category II for Classical Guitar solo:

Category II for Classical Guitar solo:

Competition of Category II will take place at Skipper Clement Skolen in Aalborg on November 18th 2022 between 16.00 – 19.00.

 

Participation Fee:

Competition only: kr. 200 (27 € ), which also covers free admission to the concert on 18th of November 2022.

Competition and Talentclass Weekend (see program under workshops): kr. 930 (125 €).

 

 

Conditions Category II:

  • The Competition is open to classical guitarists of all countries

  • Only amateurs between 13 and 17 years of age may take part

  • The competition is only completed with at least 5 registered participants

  • There is one round only.

  • Every participant taking active part declares to accept:

    • The regulations of this competition

    • The decision of the jury

    • The general rules of the competition

Regulations for playing at the round:

  • Maximal playing time is 8 minutes

  • Playing time starts as soon as the participant has taken his/her seat.

  • Free choice of repertoire

  • The participant is allowed to perform the music using sheet music on stage.

All participants will receive a diploma, if they take part in the talent seminar or the masterclass and are present at the Participators Concert and prize Ceremony on the 20.11.22 at Skipper Clement Skolen.

Regulations 4. Aalborg International Guitar Competition 2022 for classical solo guitar in 2 categories.

Competition Rules:

  • The organizers of the competition have the prerogative to refuse an application.

  • The organizers of the competition have the right to regulate the number of participating guitarists in each category.

  • The competition is open to the public.

  • The jury has the prerogative to interrupt any player that exceeds the time limits specified in Categories I and II.

  • The decision of the jury is final. The system of judging is an internal system and is not open to public discussion.

  • First prize winners at the Aalborg International Guitar Festival and Competition in Category II, may not sign up again for the same category for the next competition.

  • Remaining regulations: All potential problems and/or situations not covered by the above regulations, will be decided by the organizers of the competition

  • Organisation:

  • The deadline for all applications is the monday the 15th october 2022 (Applications will not be accepted until the registration fee has been received)

  • Cancellation from participant deadline is October the 15th 2022.

  • Half of the registration fee will be refunded if a participant decides to cancel his or her active part in the competition. Should the participant decide to cancel after October the 15th 2022, none of the fee will be refunded.

  • Each competitor is obliged to announce the compositions he or she will be performing.

  • If a participant is not present in due time, he or she will be excluded from further participation in the competition without remittance of the entrance fee.

  • The sequence of performance will be selected the evening before by drawing lots and sent by email to the participants.
